GRAFFEO'S COFFEE ROASTERY - A NORTH BEACH STAPLE SINCE 1935
~ Uncomplicated Perfection ~
My characters in both Petra's Quest and The Man from Córdoba spend time in San Francisco's Little Italy—otherwise known as North Beach. Why? Several reasons, including a popular go-to destination, Graffeo's Coffee Roastery.
It opened in 1935 when Sicilian immigrant, Giovanni Graffeo, set his mind on bringing the soul of Italian coffee culture to the mostly-Italian immigrant neighborhood. His motto: Coffee should be extraordinary without being complicated.

That motto lives on today through 81-year-old master roaster Luciano Repetto—whose expertise began when he was a small boy and when, in 1954, his father bought the business from Signore Graffeo.
Repetto grew the business to success reaching the shores of the Far East and in the City's finest Michelin-starred restaurants. His care and dedication continues with the testing of every small batch to ensure the same quality and profile have been sustained throughout all these years.

In 1978, when most roasters swore by drum machines, Luciano Repetto installed San Francisco’s first fluid bed roaster, a quiet revolution.
The fluid bed method provides an even heat on every bean, keeping its natural richness and sweetness. (Uneven heat can result in a scorched taste.)

Luciano Repetto led Graffeo's for more than 45 years. Walter A. Haas III carries it forward today.
